Designer vs. Niche Fragrances

When it comes time to buy a new fragrance or perfume, are you unsure of the difference between a designer fragrance and a niche fragrance? Not to worry. You’re not alone.

Whether you’re looking for a new signature scent or want to add a perfume to your rotation, let’s take a look at the main differences between a designer and niche fragrance.

Designer Fragrances

As the name suggests designer fragrances are released by large fashion brands. These designers also make clothing, watches and accessories.

Fashion brands may have their own in-house perfumer or may work directly with a perfumery.

Also known as mass or mainstream fragrances, the fashion houses pour a lot of money into marketing and wide distribution.

With designer perfumes, it’s all about fashion, trends and mass appeal.

Due to its wide distribution and large volumes, mainstream fragrances tend to use synthetic ingredients.

Designer fragrances are generally sold in department stores and online, direct from the fashion brands.

You could choose mainstream perfumes for affordability and risk the chance of smelling like your friends.

Niche Fragrances

Also known as artisanal, niche fragrances are made by small and medium-sized perfumeries.

Niche fragrances are not designed for the masses. Art and creativity are the priority in niche perfumeries, as their creations are much more unique.

As well, niche perfumes are made from higher-quality ingredients, and they tend to be blended better. They’re known for using naturally-derived absolutes, essential oils and extracts.

With limited distribution, you won’t find niche perfumes in department stores. You would find them at high-end independent boutiques such as Gentil Scents.

If you’re looking for a scent that most people are not likely to own, then consider a niche fragrance.

At Gentil Scents, we carry niche fragrances made by perfumeries in Italy. Browse our collection and contact us for suggestions.

Alla prossima – until next time. Arrivederci.
